Subject: The GUS and .... win95
I just installed version .468 and am getting to know WIn95.
Of course, some questions that I haven't seen answers to:
1. The first few times I ran win95 after setup, my "win" wav file sounded
scratchy and crashed Windows95. I went to the generic (but new and
improved) Win95 sound and no problems.... so why do .wav's sometimes
sound scratchy and distorted and then my Windows cratches?
2. Do protected games such as ROTT run in a Windows window or do you have
to exit to DOS? When I tried to run ROTT, I got to the loading "tables"
and then the system froze although I thought I could hear my hard drive
running very very slowly. Then, nothing else worked. My gamestar didn't
even work right.
2a. A friend has gotten ROTT to run in a window with no problem. What
can I check?
3. Since the word on GUS drivers seems to be "when Windows is released",
what are people doing in the mean time? Does megaem, SBOS, etc. work?--

Subject: Re: MAX memory chips
Hi everybody!
There is a MIRO graphics card using the MACH32 chip. My friend has the PCI
version. It comes usually with 1Meg. The upcrade to 2MEg consists of
two GUS MAX compatible chips. I tried it out myself and am going to get
one for me and other GUSSER. Those chips should be more accessible around
the world. Unfortunately they are a little more expensive, because they
are around 40nsecs.

I used Recording Session to play and Goldwave 2.11 to record at 44kHz.
It worked fine. Do not forget to set record DMA and playback DMA to different
ones. I am not sure if that is needed for Midi playing, but it cannot hurt.
Then do not turn up your input level (gain) to much. Then my GUS MAX starts
getting noisy, too.

Anybody able to explain why the demo version of LOST EDEN CD which came

I tried the ftp site

In the document it said that it:
Does not include PowerChords or Recording Session.
Does not include MIDI Patches.
Does not include Mega-Em 3.xx. (Has a Mega-Em 2.07)
Does not include MAXSBOS. (Has SBOS 3.82)
Does anyone know where they are?

I have a problem with installation and using
GUS v.3.73. SETUP return "SBOS vector not functional"
and SBOS driver - "NMI disabled on this P.C.".
DOS applications don't work properly and don't emulate
SB. With the help of MEGA-EM I run some soft, but not all.
Even programs with their own ULTRASOUND driver don't want
to work. Only demo and bonus soft coming with GUS.
In WINDOWS is everything OK.
Could somebody explain me what shall I do?

Subject: Sampling and playing a sample simultaneously
Hello GUS-owners,
I'm still struggling with the following questions:
- - Is it possible with a GUS (or another soundcard) to sample on
one channel and to play on the other channel simultaneously?
* How fast must my hard disk, cpu, (local) bus etc. be?
- - Is there software available for:
- mixing sampled tracks
- adding effects (delay, chorus, eq, etc) to a sampled track
Please tell me anything (relevant) about the subject.
Many thanks in advanced,
Arjan.

It makes it easier to run games. Don't knock it. Since in all probability
you can get one second-hand, it's a great way to make sure everything
runs in some way. It also doesn't add to creative labs profits, if you
are concerned about this :) In my opinion, the ultimate sound card
solution at the moment is SB something + ACE. 100% compatibility as well
as ultrasound quality.
In the future (maybe) Win95 will make DOS a thing of the past, and since
it includes native wavetable soundcard drivers (the facilities for;
Gravis still have to write them) sound card incompatibilities will also
be a thing of the past.
> To tell you the truth .I kinda get kicks outta trying different ways

Yeah, well, each to their own. And some games, it really *is* impossible.
I understand the point about if gus was sb compatible there wouldn't be
any support at all. This might well be true. However now we're in the
position of getting support in most games, and also; even if you do have
an SB as well, are you going to be *pleased* when the game can only do FM
music? I don't think so... Are you going to buy the next game from the
same company with the same music drivers? I don't think so... There's
still pressure for GUS support.

Noteworthy Composer. My brother registered it, so it must be good. I
think the file is nwc????.zip. It's probably on CICA or SIMTEL archives
(runs under windows of course).

Subject: Joystick problems with ACE
Help!!!
I bought an ACE to go with my SB16. Now my Flightstick pro buttons
no longer work (any of them). If I disable the joystick port on the
SB16 card, microsoft's MSD still detects a game port. If I remove
the ACE card, the problem disappears. Obviously the ACE has no game
port.
My settings are SB16 IRQ 5, address 220, DMA 1 and 5. ACE IRQ 11,
address 250, DMA 6. Since I bought the ACE to make games sound
better, I'll have to take it back if I can't get the joystick
working with it.
Thanks for any suggestions. clint

Fellow GUSers,
Due to the fact that I do not think that it is possible to get my SB16
SCSI and GUS to coexist in the same machine I will be selling my GUS and
GUS Max.
Both cards have one meg of DRAM and I have all of the original software
packaging. If you are interested I would let the GUS go for say $50.00
and the Max for $135.00 I would let both go for $175.00. Shipping would
be vis FedEx COD and yes you would have to pay for shipping.
Serious offers only.
All of the above is moot if someone can tell me how to get the SB SCSI
and the GUS to coexist.

Subject: various questions (Windows, MegaEm303b)
I have just upgraded my computer to a P5-100, and have run into
several problems with my GUS/MAX. This card used to work perfectly
in my old machine, by the way.
Problem 1: MegaEm 3.03b no longer works. It locks the computer as
it tries to load the patches. The old MegaEm (2.03?) works fine.
Problem 2: Sound with the old MegaEm is ood, but not great. There
are occasional buzzing sounds in the background. This occurs in
games like TIE Fighter.
Everything else seems to be working just fine. There are no
interrupt conflicts; I have fixed those. If anyone out there has any
suggestions, I would appreciate it. I _really_ want to get MegaEm
3.03b working again...

There are two gus411.zip on epas. At least, there was. One was

Subject: No MIDI in Windows with GUS. Please Help!
Hello!
I recently noticed a problem in Windows. I can't get programs to
recognize that a MIDI device is installed on the system!
I remember getting it to work before, but now it is not working. The
only program that recognizes the GUS as a MIDI device is Media Player.
all other games and programs do not.
I did make some changes on my system, but unfortunately I do not know
exactly when the problem started. :( I did: Upgrade GUS software
to version 4.11 from 3.59 from 3.56. Add a SCSI CD-ROM. Add and
remove (for obvious reasons!) a Thunderboard soundcard.
I tried reinstalling the older versions of the GUS software and changing
the GUS settings, but nothing worked.
I have a rev. 2.2 GUS with settings of: GF1 IRQ: 15 DMA: 5 SB/MIDI
IRQ: 5 Port: 220
Does anyone have any ideas why I can't get MIDI sound in windows?
Any help would be *GREATLY* appreciated!!
Thanks!
